Did you know that a risk factor for developmental delays starts with feeding? A recent article published in The Journal of Pediatrics found that children with feeding problems are four or more times more likely to miss a developmental milestone. https://www.jpeds.com/article/S0022-3476(21)01075-1/fulltext
Feeding is the foundation for all areas of development.
So many parents don’t know what to look for when it comes to healthy feeding/ eating for their baby. Oftentimes the focus is only on whether the child is growing or not. Unfortunately, this focus on growth only has contributed to a wide range of problems with feeding including what I believe is the most difficult thing to treat in feeding therapy… anxiety. Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is one of the diagnoses we give to kids that is the result of anxiety. While some children are more prone to anxiety, their environment and how we parent have a significant impact.
The best thing parents can do to prevent these issues is to become educated on the behaviors and skills that set your baby up for success… and it starts with feeding!
